World's Strongest Woman 2009!!

I've won Britain's Strongest Woman on two consecutive years and have only just received my first invite to World's Strongest Woman to be held in Dubai in March/April 2009. I am unsure as to whether I will be able to compete at this event yet as I commence my training to become a Police Officer at the Scottish Police College next month. The plan for the moment is to train events in addition to just doing lifts to get a qualifying total at the Scottish Powerlifting Championships in February as well as improving my fitness for my police training!!

World Powerlifting Champion 2008!!!

So the WDFPF World Championships were held in Evansville last month. It was a hectic week leading up to the comp. I sat my fitness test for the Police on the Thursay, the day before I left on an epic 16 hour journey Stateside. On the day of the comp I felt tired and the events of the week leading up to the competition had taken there toll. Fortunately, I reclaimed my world title but was disappointed with the lifts on the day as I was expecting great things. Training had gone well for this comp and I was looking for at least 540kg total. I was disappointed with the 500kg total I got but must admit there wasn't much left on the day. In retrospect, I think I peaked 2 weeks too soon for this competition as my big lifts had come in the gym 2 weeks before the competition s it's back to the drawing board. I've got to be happy getting my World Title back but it's back to the drawing board to hit the big numbers in competition that I know I am capable of doing!!

Two Weeks To Go To The Worlds!!

Its two weeks to go to my World Powerlifting Championships in Evansville, Indianapolis and my numbers are looking good. I have completed the last of my heavy lifts on squat where I managed a comfortable 205kg and a 130kg which saw me struggle with the last inch from lockout but im sure I will nail that bad boy on the day of the comp. Tomorrow I'm doing my last heavy deadlift so I will update this blog as soon as I can. Next week I will just train to my opening comp weights to let the body recover in plenty of time for the big weights on the 23rd November.

Stregth Challenge!!!

So I've been challenged to a 2 day event to determine who is the stronger athlete, myself or my boyfriend Brian (I think his masculinity is being threatened). He proposes that on day one we do a raw powerlifting competition, 9 lifts with strict powerlifting rules. Day 2 will comprise of three strongman events (as yet to be determined). He is still a bit sore about me kicking his arse in the car carry event at the Dumfries and Galloway Comp where I beat him by 8 seconds so he feels he has a point to prove and to restore some pride!! His ass is mine!!!

Road to the Worlds 2008!!

So it's three weeks to go until my WDFPF World Championships in Evansville, Indianapolis and training is going to plan. I feel as though I have a point to prove as I was unable to compete in the World Championships last year as I had just had what turned out to be pointless and needless surgery and unfortunately bombed at the Worlds in 2006 due to poor advice and management from my former coach. An invaluable lesson that i've learned and definitely something that I will never do again. I'm pretty much back to full fitness and still have two weeks left of training left before my comp. My numbers are up and i'm feeling in good shape so I hope to produce something special on the day so watch this space!!!

About me

My name is Bernie McKinley, I am 29 years old and live in Dumbarton. I work as an staff nurse in Glasgow Western Infirmary. I started competitive powerlifting with the BDFPA in 2004, winning Scottish, British, European, and World championships. In 2005 it was another clean sweep, and in 2006 started focussing more on strongwoman, winning both Scotland's Strongest Woman, UK's Strongest Woman, and coming 3rd in Britain's Strongest Woman. 2007 saw me take the title of Britain's Strongest Woman, which I then retained in 2008. I am currently training for the World Powerlifting Championships which takes place in Indianapolis in November, where I am hoping to reclaim my title. In 2009 I am planning to prioritise my training towards strongwoman, with a view to competing in Europe's and World's Strongest Woman.

I currently train at Marinecraft Gym in Dumbarton (www.bebo.com/marinecraftmuthas) and Unit20 in Queensferry for my strongwoman events (http://www.unit20.org.uk/)
